Canon Powershot SD200 Review

Canon-powershot-200-sizeThe Canon Powershot SD200 micro digital camera takes a great picture for a camera its size. Bob Atkins at Photo.net has a good review of the camera. “You don’t buy an SD200 (or SD300/400) for advanced photography. You can get cameras with more capability (aperture priority, shutter priority and manual exposure for example) for the same price or maybe less (e.g. Powershot A510 or Powershot A520) However they are larger and the major reason you’d buy an SD200 is because it’s small. Despite the lack of full manual control, I still like the SD200. In fact I bought one myself so I’d have a camera that I can carry with me at all times. Image quality is quite good and you do have manual control over almost everything except for exposure (and even there you do have exposure compensation). You also get some remarkably good video modes (with audio) including 640×480 at 30fps. The 3.2MP is enough for excellent 4×6 and 5×7 prints and even 8×10 doesn’t look too bad. The price (currently under $180) is pretty low too. If you want more pixels, the SD300 has 4MP  and the SD400 (around $265) has 5MP   in essentially the same camera body with the same camera features. The step up from 3.2MP to 4MP is pretty insignificant, so if you want more pixels than the SD200, I’d go to the 5MP SD400.”

Canon Powershot A410 3.2 Megapixel Camera Review

Canon A410The Canon Powershot A410 3.2 Megapixel Camera is an entry level camera that provides a very easy and intuitive interface for the beginner to use. This is the camera for Mom, so to speak. It takes a good quality picture, has an easy to use interface, and the pictures live up to the Canon name.

The camera features a 3.2 optical zoom, and provides eight special scene modes, including Portrait, Night Snapshot, Kids & Pets, Indoor, Foliage, Snow, Beach and Fireworks and five Photo Effect modes, including Vivid, Neutral, Low Sharpening, Sepia, and Black & White.

One of the real benefits that the Canon A410 provides is the use of AA batteries. Canon has a processor that is supposed to reduce power consumption, so the A410 can get 400 pictures when using rechargable NiMH batteries.

Again, if you are a serious photographer, this is not the camera for you. But if you want to get a digital camera for the grandparents, the Canon A410 is a very good choice. Priced at around $150 USD this also is an economical camera for a Christmas present.

Sony Announces DSC-N1 has Touch Screen Focusing

Sony DSC-N1Tom’s Hardware shows us the new cool feature of the Sony DSC-N1.”Sony preps a new tweak for its Cybershot digital still camera series. The DSC-N1 comes with a “Free Spot Focus,” which lets users focus on objects with a simple tap on the LCD screen. The camera will also integrate enough internal memory to house a photo album with up to 500 pictures.

While the photo album is an interesting feature, we would expect more consumers to be more drawn to the touch sensitive 3.0-inch LCD screen that powers many of the user menus and functions. The screen also helps in focusing and in addition to auto focus, the Cybershot N1 has a unique “Free Spot Focus” that lets users tap on the LCD screen to make the camera focus on an object. “
