Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT / 350D

Canon_DigitalRebeXTThe Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT / 350D is an 8 megapixel digital SLR that is one of the lightest cameras in it’s class. Photography Review’s Laurence Chen has this review on the Rebel.

The Rebel XT is a solid performer at a bargain price (for digital photography). Matched with quality EF-S lenses, such as the 17-85mm or the 10-22mm, the XT covers the focal-length gamut and brings true wide angle back within the financial reach of most photographers.

Who Should Buy The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT / 350D

  • Those who may need a quiet shutter: wedding, wildlife, documentary photographers.
  • Budget, beginning, and casual photographers who want control and lens selection.
  • Photographers looking for a small, lightweight camera system to use while traveling/hiking.
  • Pros who don’t like most point-and-shoots (me)!

Why not buy an XT?

  • Physically too small for large hands.
  • Menu navigation awkward, inefficient.
  • Lack of weatherproofing.
  • Consumer build-quality is high, but not built for rigorous use or extreme environmental conditions.
  • Slow continuous shooting inadequate for sports.
  • Small image sensor results in 1.6x focal length multiplier; L-series lenses slightly compromised.
  • Lack of special-purpose, high-end features such as 45 AF points or flash exposure lock.

Nikon D200 Review

D200_NikonThe Nikon D200 10.2 Megapixel camera is one of the best new cameras to come into the marketplace.

Digital Photography Review  has one a comprehensive review of the camera. They say “The Nikon D200 was announced on 1st November 2005, some three and a half years since Nikon revealed their first prosumer digital SLR, the D100. It’s fair to say however that the D200 is a completely different beast altogether, it shares far more with its ‘bigger brother’ the the D2X than its earlier namesake. The D200 has the robust build quality of the D2X, a 10.2 million pixel CCD sensor and a compact design more like the D100. Just as the D100 the D200 has a CCD sensor, unlike the D2X which utilized a CMOS sensor. It’s clear that this camera is aimed at the same kind of market as the recently announced Canon EOS 5D. From a features, control and performance point of view the D200 is closer to the D2X than any other model.”

Canon EF 100mm f2/8 MacroUSM Lens Reviewed

A great first person review of the Canon EF 100mm f2/8 MacroUSM Lens by Darren at Digital Photography Blog. He captures some great shots of bugs in his lawn to show the quality of the zoom lens that Canon has come out with for the Canon EOS 20D.

100mm gives plenty of working length and allows you to get in nice and close. Focusing is fast (although it takes some practice to get a bug in front of a distant background). Contrast and sharpness seem good although I’m looking forward to using it on the weekend with my tripod attached.

The lens is a little bigger than I was expecting but not as heavy as some of my other lenses. I’ve heard it’s a very good portrait lens also so this one might be regular feature on my 20D. Digital Photography Blog

80% of Professional Photographers Use Digital SLR’s

Digital Photography Blog has a post up today showing that 80% of the professional photographers have gone digital as opposed to film based cameras.

The switch to digital has already transpired, with nearly 80% of pros owning a digital SLR and 52% planning to purchase a new one within a year.
